FAQ: Insurance & Hail Damage

Q: What if the Insurance Company Denies, Delays or Low-Balls?
example of roof damageA: In my experience, most of the times the insurance company does the right thing. Sometimes, the insurance company will have an “independent” engineer or roofer come to inspect the roof. That “independent” engineer or roofer may say that the roof has no damage...the insurance company may deny the claim ... The insurance company’s “no,” is not the end of the inquiry…it is just the beginning.

We're continuing our post about how poorly ventilated attics cause building headaches and pocket-book aches. If you wish to read the article about how heat build-up in an attic can cause problems, please click on this link: How Heat Build Up in Attic Causes Problems.

LOOKING AHEAD TO COLD WEATHER, SNOW, AND ICE

Not only does a poorly ventilated roof cause potential structural problems in the roofing system, it also causes additional expenses that can possibly be avoided.

POOR VENTILATION CAN CAUSE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO YOUR HOME

Did you know that your roof even needs ventilation in the winter time? It does! Excess moisture can build up in an improperly ventilated roof, condense and fall. How does this happen? It's simple, once you think about it. In the winter time, certain household appliances, vapors from cooking steam, moisture from baths and showers, and other household activities can cause improperly ventilated attics to collect moisture. This MOISTURE CLINGS TO THE UNDERSIDE OF YOUR ROOF. Then, it condenses and falls, resulting in potential problems. The problems include:

  • Wet and inefficient attic insulation
  • Warped roof decking
  • Buckled shingles and felt
  • Growth of Mildew in the attic
  • Rotting of your wood frame

All of these are potentially expensive problems! But - wait - there's more! Have you heard the term "ICE DAMS"?

ICE DAMS FROM MELTING SNOW AND ICE

Proper ventilation of your roof can reduce the amount of initial melting of the snow and/or ice on your roof. This reduces the possibilities that ice dams would form. How do ice dams form? During the winter season, water from ice and show on the roof melts and runs down the deck to the cooler eaves. This run-off can then re-freeze, creating what is called an "Ice Dam". This solid ice can force water back up under the shingles, causing your roof to leak into your home's ceiling and walls. The results: a potential loss of thousands of dollars.

INSPECTION IS QUICK AND FREE

We hate to see this happen to building owners! Especially when the solution is so cost-effective. Call us for a free inspection of your roof's ventilation system. We can check to make sure that your attic is properly protected.

Poorly ventilated roofs can cause multiple problems to a building, along with costing you a nice, extra chunk of money.

Here's our suggestions to keep your building happy through the hot summer months in Oklahoma. Remember: we'll come out to inspect your roof to see if it's causing your building or pocket book any damage!

HOW WILL A PROPER ROOFING VENTILATION SYSTEM HELP ME?

First, what exactly does an attic ventilation system do? The quick answer: it allows a continual flow of outside air through the attic. It creates a balance between your buildings' air intake (this occurs at your eaves) and your exhaust (this occurs either at our near your roof ridge).

BENEFITS: A properly installed roofing ventilation system will protect the efficiency of the insulation at the roof area and help to lower your temperatures in the living spaces.

A nice side benefit, is that it reduces the load on your air conditioner. It will also help prevent premature aging of your roofing system! And - it will help prevent warping, cracking, or breaking down of wood framing. This is good news!

TELL ME MORE! It's recommended that your building have a MINIMUM of 1 square foot of attic ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic space. This means, for example, if your attic has 1200 square feet, you need a minimum of 4 square feet of ventilation. This breaks down into: 2 feet of intake and 2 feet of exhaust.

A SHOCKING LACK OF PROPER VENTILATION!

According to GAF's website 9 out of 10 houses in North America do not have proper attic ventilation. Amazing! Why is that the case? Because most home owners are not aware of the problem and do not know the impact it causes to their home.

THE SOLUTION IS EASY!

Call us now so we can come check out your roof's ventilation system. In just a few moments we can determine if your building is at risk due to improper heat ventilation in your attic.

With so many good products to choose from, we hate to see anyone suffer because of inadequate roof ventilation.
